Descendant - Social Campaign & Impact Content

Role Creative Producer • Director • Writer • Editor • Animator • Actor

Client Participant Media • Netflix

Descendant is a critically acclaimed Netflix documentary that delves into the legacy of the Clotilda—the last known slave ship to illegally transport enslaved Africans to the United States. Directed by Margaret Brown, the film centers on the Africatown community in Mobile, Alabama, whose ancestors were brought over on the Clotilda. The film's release was accompanied by a comprehensive impact campaign aimed at preserving Black historical narratives, supporting environmental justice efforts, and encouraging audiences to explore their own family histories.

What I did

In this project, I directed, produced, and edited a series of social-first video reels that supported the film's release. These reels featured a mix of motion graphics, interview-driven storytelling, and community-focused activations, including a cookout series with Stephen Satterfield from High on the Hog. The content was designed to be platform-friendly, visually engaging, and deeply human, capturing the emotional and historical weight of the film.

SHORTY IMPACT AWARDS

Winner

  • Shorty Impact Awards Winner: The campaign's impact strategy centered on preserving Black historical narratives, supporting environmental justice efforts, and encouraging audiences to explore their own family histories. My work contributed to these objectives through a blend of motion graphics digital spots, interview-driven storytelling, and community-focused digital activations.

  • National Dialogue: Through strategic partnerships, screenings, and social impact events, the Descendant campaign invited broader conversations around the legacy of slavery in America. These efforts led to educational initiatives, museum exhibits, and increased media coverage of systemic inequalities.
